Food fittings, accessories and valves are subject to stricter manufacturing constraints than those of the industrial range. These constraints relate in particular to 2 points:

The condition of the surfaces, which is given by the Ra, which measures the difference between the lowest and highest points of the surface under study. It is measured in microns. For the food industry, the requirements are higher than for industrial fittings, to prevent the fluid being transported from depositing on the walls of the fittings and valves.

There are several standards for food industry fittings, accessories and valves, such as SMS and DIN.

• SMS, Swedish Manufacturing Standard, is a Swedish standard mainly used in France, United Kingdom, Spain and Northern Africa.
• The DIN, Deutsche Institut für Normung, is a German standard which is mainly used in German-speaking countries and in Italy.
• MACON, which is a French standard used in the wine industry, but is gradually being replaced by SMS;
• CLAMP, which is a standard used when the production line has to be disassembled quickly and more easily
